North Shore DUI Defense Attorney
Out-of-State Offenses
Massachusetts has recent laws that result in out-of-state offenses being treated exactly as if they occurred in our state. That means that if you are applying for a driver's license and have a DUI conviction on your record, you will be required to jump through several legal hoops before you are allowed to get a license in the state. Massachusetts is part of the NDR, or National Drivers Registry, which keeps track of DUI convictions and charges in almost all of the states in the union. If you are a resident on the North Shore and got charged with a DUI offense in another state, you will still have to deal with the legal system in our state in order to be able to continue to drive. If it is discovered that you are driving on a Massachusetts license and have a DUI charge in another state, it is likely that your driver's license will be immediately revoked.
How to Handle an Out-of-State Offense
The procedure for handling an out-of-state offense is specific, and you will need legal assistance to get it done. You will have to have paperwork from the state in which you were charged or convicted. You will need a driving record from that state that is no more than 30 days old. In some serious cases, the abstract of your case will be needed, to show that the penalties have been complied to and complete. If you have a DUI conviction on your record, it is quite probable that if you are convicted later in Massachusetts that you will face some serious repercussions, including driving with an ignition interlock device when you are allowed to drive again.
