Information on Ignition Interlock Devices

After certain DUI convictions, you will be allowed to drive your vehicle only after you have had an ignition interlock device installed.  This device is required for anyone who has a "hardship license".  It is also a requirement if you have a second DUI conviction.  The device is installed in your car, and is about the size of a mobile phone.  You will not be able to start the vehicle without first blowing into the device.  If you have consumed any alcohol, your vehicle will not start.  It will ask you to blow into it while you are operating the vehicle at random times as well, to ensure that you have not drunk any alcohol after you have begun driving.  These devices must be taken into have the data on them uploaded once a month, and your maintenance fee is about $85 per month when driving with an ignition interlock device.  It is crucial that you have legal representation by a North Shore DUI Defense Attorney if you are facing these challenges.

Ignition Interlock Devices in Massachusetts

Some individuals in the North Shore area that were arrested and charged with a DUI thought that they would be treated as a "first time offender" as they had an earlier DUI conviction decades ago.  However, with the new laws regarding DUI, it doesn't matter how far back in the past your earlier conviction was - you are a repeat offender.  In this case, you will not get your driver's license back without have an ignition interlock de vice installed in your vehicle.  It has been made more difficult to get a Hardship License, which also requires an ignition interlock device to be installed.  Whatever your situation is, it is strongly advised that when dealing with any aspect of DUI charge and ignition interlock device, Registry Hearings, or any other aspect that you have legal representation by your side.  This can make all the difference in the outcome of your case.

After a second DUI conviction, you will reach a point where you become eligible to have your license reinstated.  However, you will be required to have the ignition interlock device installed before you will be allowed to drive.  One of these devices will have to be installed in every vehicle you drive, and the installation cost is about $200 per car.  The monitoring fee for each car is about $85 per month.  These are part of the costs that you will have to carry when driving with an ignition interlock device.  However, it can still be better than the alternative, which is usually public transportation.  If you fail to show up and have the data uploaded on a monthly basis, your license will once again be revoked, so it is quite a serious matter to be driving with an ignition interlock device.  However, this is far superior to driving with a suspended license, being caught and then thrown in jail and losing the opportunity to drive again for years.
